Calzones

Recipe Submitted by Birdy ..|.. Category: Bread Machine

Make your own pizza pockets! Note: this is a great way to get pizza in a diet, read the end of the recipe for how to make it work healthy.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tbsp Olive oil or reg oil
  • 3 cups flour
  • 2 tsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp minced garlic
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 1 1/4 tsp yeast

Pizza toppings and meat:

  • 12 oz lean ground beef, well cooked
  • 3/4 cup mushrooms (can cook with beef or fresh)
  • 1/3 cup green pepper, chopped
  • 3/4 cup mozzarella cheese
  • 3/4 cup pizza sauce (small can)
  • 1 tbsp milk

Directions

Put dough ingredients (above the words pizza toppings) in machine on dough cycle.

Pull out and roll into large rectange. Usually I work with half the dough. Cut into 8"x8" size rectangles or squares. I'm not picky myself.

I use the Pampered Chef large cookie scoop and put about 3 scoops of toppings on a square of dough. Brush edges with milk (optional), and squeeze together the edges to make a closed seam.

Place seam side down on tray, pop in the oven and bake. 425 for 12 - 15 minutes.

I use a pizza stone, so I have them all ready and the stone heating in the oven from the time I pull the dough out. Once ready I pop them quickly onto the stone and voila!

Note: I never use the suggested toppings. This is a great way to get pizza but reduce your fats in the cheese etc. A little cheese goes far here. And, you can stretch the dough and make it quite thin too. The recipe says 8 servings, but I get 16. Good for diet cravings! And put in lots and lots of veggie toppings. Broccolli and Cauliflower work in this setting as well.
